A mix made almost entirely of strings and breath. The oud at its heart—Anouar Brahem, Le Trio Joubran, Joseph Tawadros—drawn toward the open, contemplative edge of jazz, with Anoushka Shankar’s sitar and Kayhan Kalhor’s kamancheh holding the same patient air. Then, the ground shifts south: Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré and Les Filles de Illighadad and their desert blues, the Ethio-jazz of Mulatu Astatke and Getatchew Mekurya warming underneath. Few words, all instrument—a slow, wide-open listen.
